Profession (Wis., Taken Individually)

To quote the Player's Handbook 3.5 p70, "A Craft skill is specifically focused on creating something.  If nothing is created by the endeavor, it probably falls under the heading of a Profession skill (page 80)".  This has to be one of the most common mistakes in DnD.  I see character sheets all the time with Craft skills as both crafts and professions or totally mixed up, and worst of all, I don't always catch it.

I've created these skill re-definitions almost solely for these skills, but of course skills are just one more area for customnization.  Professions can also vary widely based on locale and region. More could easily be created and added. Try to keep this skill strickly to trade skills, as most service professions, while apt for characters to have, aren't really for this skill, such as adventurer, mercenary, quide, and sailor. These may work for role-play, but as such will bring adventure, which will in itself provide regular gold.

Apothecary

A medical professional who formulates and dispenses materia medica to physicians, surgeons and patients — a role now served by a pharmacist (or a chemist or dispensing chemist) and some caregivers.

In addition to pharmacy responsibilities, the apothecary offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery. Apothecaries often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of an apothecary may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method.

Book Keeper

Bookkeeping is to be understood in the context of a business. It is simply the recording of financial transactions. Transactions include purchases, sales, receipts and payments by an individual or organization. Bookkeeping is usually performed by a bookkeeper. Many individuals mistakenly consider bookkeeping and accounting to be the same thing. This confusion is understandable because the accounting process includes the bookkeeping function, but is just one part of the accounting process. The accountant creates reports from the recorded financial transactions recorded by the bookkeeper and files forms with government agencies. There are some common methods of bookkeeping such as the single-entry bookkeeping system and the double-entry bookkeeping system. But while these systems may be seen as "real" bookkeeping, any process that involves the recording of financial transactions is a bookkeeping process.

A bookkeeper (or book-keeper), also known as an accounting clerk or accounting technician, is a person who records the day-to-day financial transactions of an organization. A bookkeeper is usually responsible for writing the "daybooks". The daybooks consist of purchases, sales, receipts, and payments. The bookkeeper is responsible for ensuring all transactions are recorded in the correct day book - suppliers ledger, customer ledger and general ledger.

The bookkeeper brings the books to the trial balance stage. An accountant may prepare the income statement and balance sheet using the trial balance and ledgers prepared by the bookkeeper.

Brewer

A person who brews beer. For the sake of simplicity, this can be used for winemakers, distillers, or other crafters of alchoholic beverages.
