HOUSE RULES

Aside from the usual rules and the optional and variant rules that can be found in the Player's Handbook and the Unearthed Arcana, These are the rules that I occasionally use in specific campaigns. I will usually hand out a chart with said rules listed and either checked or unchecked, indicating their use, but if you forget a rule, it lies here for your reference.

Distinct Books out of Play- The DM chooses to disallow certain books during the character creation process or at all.

Distinct Classes out of Play- The DM chooses to disallow certain classes either at character creation, past a certain level, or at all during gameplay.

PHB Classes only- Only PHB classes allowed during character creation, past a certain level, or at all.

Gender Bonus- Males get a +1 to Str, Con, and Int while women get a +1 to Dex, Wis, and Cha.

“Gay-dar” Rule- A player may choose to take a trait to re-assign the 3 +1’s from the gender bonus, but the further they stray from the “norm” the more people read them as “Gay” on their “Gay-dar”.  This actually applies nothing to the PCs sexual orientation.

Lowest to an 18- after rolling stats, change the lowest stat to an 18.

2nd Lowest to a 10- after rolling stats, change the 2nd lowest stat to a 10.

2nd Lowest to an 8- after rolling stats, change the 2nd lowest stat to a 8.

3 Lives Till Death- When a PC dies, they must make a new character.  The old must be turned in to the DM.  When the Player has had three characters die, they must leave for the remainder of the Campaign.  When all Players are out or if the PCs succeed in their goal, it’s Game Over.  If the Players wish to have a lost player back at the table, they must find a way in game of resurrecting one of the lost player’s characters.

Shut up Kenny- Shut the Fuck up, Kenny.

Shut up Ninja- Shut the Fuck up, Ninja.

Starting Money Restrictions- The DM has placed limits on Starting Gold or the amount allowed to be spent.

“Fuck You” Points- The DM will bestow these points for every cool moment that he feels deserves them.  These points may also be used as bargaining chips with the DM later on.

Assigned Upkeep Costs- See the Upkeep variant in the DMG section.  This rule means the DM reserves the right to assign which upkeep cost each pc must pay.

DM Makes Sensory Rolls- The DM will jot down and keep track of various skill and other type of stats on each PC, utilizing them to make certain sensory rolls for players.  The general role of this is to allow players to know how well they did on checks that their character would be able to know, such as knowing he could have made a better jump than that… Skills like knowledge or listen will be rolled without the player knowing how well they did, thus the character knows what he knows, or hears what he hears, without the impression they “listened poorly”.

DM Makes All the Rolls- The DM has some form of copy of each character and will be making all rolls, occasionally including attack and damage rolls.  This is to create a total element of surprise for the players and attempt to immerse them more in the story than the game itself.

Character Donation- A player may donate their character as an NPC and make a new character under the circumstance that the player simply is no longer happy playing their character, for reasons such as experimenting with a new class that ultimately bored or was too difficult for the player.

Alignment restrictions- Players are not allowed to  choose certain alignment.  Any classes that can only be a restricted alignment are therefore barred as well.

Only Magic Restores Fallen Party PCs-  If playing with a Party and your character meets his demise, only magic spells such as raise dead can bring that specific character back to life, or reincarnation to allow the PC to create a new character.
